All domestic commercial vessels under the national law are required to meet design, construction, stability and equipment standards.
A certificate of survey is evidence that a vessel has been surveyed and meets specified standards for design, construction, stability and safety equipment that apply to the vessel.
These standards are set out in Marine Order 503 (Certificate of Survey – national law) 2018.

Regardless of the size or type of vessel you are purchasing, your number one priority should be engaging an independent marine surveyor to conduct a Pre-purchase Condition Survey.
To gain an independent and impartial survey, it is important to select your own experienced marine surveyor, not necessarily one provided or recommended by a yacht broker.
As expert Surveyors, Rod Twitchin and his RTM team will become your principal ally in your decision to purchase. With countless miles steamed at sea, including ocean crossings, our highly experienced team have the qualifications, equipment, and attention to detail required to complete a comprehensive inspection of a vessel, in and out of the water.
PRE-PURCHASE SURVEYS PROVIDE BOAT BUYERS WITH PEACE OF MIND PRIOR TO PURCHASE.
Whether it be for a new or pre-owned vessel, a thorough survey can help you make the right purchasing decisions and save you time, money and any frustration or disputes in the future. Pre-purchase boat inspections may also be necessary to secure finance and/or insurance.
Conducted by our professional marine surveyors, your pre-purchase marine survey is an in-depth examination of the vessel you are considering buying. It will highlight any issues that you can’t easily see, for example osmosis blistering, softened decks, rotting stringers, etc. Your new boat may look great from the outside but beware, there is plenty you can’t see!
Our “in and out” of water inspections will help you determine the overall condition of the boat (including inspecting the hull, machinery, ancillary systems, rigging, interior and exterior fittings etc), along with providing an up-to-date valuation of the vessels to ensure you are paying a fair price.
The inspection will also identify any previous damage, or substandard repair work and highlight any possible faults or future maintenance that you need to factor into your purchase decision.
The findings are formalised into a report and professionally presented with colour reference photos, offering you a comprehensive appraisal of the vessel.
When engaging Rod Twitchin Marine, our expertise is not limited to simply providing you with a written report, we are proud to offer a turnkey service to assist you through the entire purchasing process and beyond.
We appreciate that purchasing a boat is a significant investment and we are on hand to help guide clients through the process.
Our diligence matched with our experience means you get peace of mind and can make an informed decision when purchasing your next boat.
Many insurance companies won’t accept your insurance application without a comprehensive Insurance Condition Report.
They will ask you to provide a Marine Condition Survey Report to help them understand the seaworthiness, overall condition and value of your vessel to ensure you are securing the right level of cover for your boat.
Our “in and out” of water inspections are specific to the insurance company’s requirements and are formalised into a professionally presented report with specific comments and colour reference photos.
IN THE EVENT OF A CLAIM:
Depending on the size and type of claim your insurer may also request an updated Insurance Condition Report to be able to process your claim.
RTM understand that during the claims process you need to act quickly yet thoroughly. We offer a varied range of services assisting vessel owners and insurance companies to ensure a smooth claims process.
Our services include claims handling, investigation and reporting reflecting loss claims and offering expert advice relating to legal matters. We are experienced in guiding our clients through the claims process and liaising with insurers, repairers, and owners.
On & Off Hire surveys are often undertaken on behalf of a client who is considering charting a vessel for commercial purposes although it maybe for any kind of a vessel including commercial or pleasure.
Rod Twitchin and his RTM team can conduct this survey, which is a detailed inspection of the vessel’s registration, compliance certificates, machinery, accommodations, navigational equipment and gear to determine the condition of the vessel. This ensures that any pre-existing damage to the vessel is not disputed or charged to the charterer on completion of hire.
We are able to conduct On & Off Hire surveys that cover any special requests specified by the charterer or vessel owner. A detailed report is accompanied by a catalogue of photographs illustrating the condition of the vessel as seen by our surveyor.
We also conduct pre-purchase surveys on behalf of prospective buyers and P & I condition surveys for underwriters and insurers.
Feel free to call us anytime for complimentary advice on your vessel purchase or your marine survey process.
